Shyam Selvadurai was born in Sri Lanka. He is the author of Funny Boy, Cinnamon Gardens, Swimming in the Monsoon Sea, and The Hungry Ghosts. He is the editor of a comprehensive anthology of Sri Lankan literature, Many Roads Through Paradise. His books have been published internationally and translated into ten languages.
