Writing “Precarious” Citizenship in Recent Canadian Fiction

Community Building / Le renforcement des collectivités Craft of Writing / L’art de l’écriture

This panel explores recent Canadian fiction that addresses issues of equity and diversity as they intersect with Canadian citizenship as a discursive, legal and even symbolic construct. Reading selections from their recently published novels or short story collections, the panelists will discuss the ways in which diasporic and minority communities (and writers) are active participants in Canadian citizenship-building. How, in other words, might these works be viewed as critical interventions in citizenship debates and practices when such questions are increasingly fraught and vexed? Moderated by Mariam Pirbhai.
