Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s recently inaugurated category of “research-creation”—a category that includes the writing of fiction—recognizes what many writers have long understood: that writing imaginative literature not only often involves considerable research but also often itself constitutes a valuable form of intellectual investigation. In this session, three writers will address the relationship between fiction and research in their work. Combining short readings with panel discussion, we will consider fiction’s affinities with more conventional forms of scholarly research while identifying the ways in which fiction serves as a complement and corrective to those forms.
