A coin toss. The I Ching. N+7. Google Translate. So many ways to get chance into the poem, to ask the universe, as accident, to write it with you. Not all ways wear chance on their sleeve — are obviously aleatory. We’ll explore how documentary, prosodic, and projective modes of composition may quietly be shot through with contingency. Unexpected finds with Google Street View. A glance at an abandoned house that changes a sonnet’s course. Scriptural gestures the poet treats as accidents of his own making. Does contingency still, in such guises, get the poet round the demanding and demeaning ego?
